REAL LEGEND- Jay Brown

Jay Brown has recently started a new position as Chief People Officer with STEM Preparatory Schools. She is an innovative, pace-setting leader and innovator, who recently served as the Head of Schools for LEAD Public Schools. She oversaw the state-run Achievement School District LEAD campuses with the goal of moving the schools off of the priority list and meeting state expectations. Prior to taking on her current role, Jay also spent three years as the network’s first Chief Academic Officer. Her big rocks included establishing a guaranteed and viable curriculum, planning and delivering effective professional learning and creating common assessments across all schools. She has led school teams to improve adult culture, academic achievement and value-added student growth at the highest levels (Level 4-5). She increased teacher retention in two years from 56% to 76% outpacing the state-run (Achievement School District) charter average of 31%. In four years as Head of Schools, she wrote, received, and managed state and federal grants for Achievement School District campuses earning $10,000-$871, 000. In 2020, she was selected by TN Chief of Districts and Schools to serve on the state School Transition Advisory Team.

Previously, she worked as a leadership coach with the third largest school district in the country under the management of Academy of Urban of School Leadership (AUSL). She was responsible for leadership coaching, new teacher orientation and principal program development. During this time, she was selected to participate as a guest educator for Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.

Jay’s background includes serving as the Director of School Support for the Cristo Rey Network (comprised of 25 urban, Catholic high schools in 18 states) and the Associate VP of Leadership Development with School Performance New York, a data management and accountability group founded by Doug Lemov. Jay taught middle school science and elementary grades for seven years and was the Elementary Director at Milwaukee College Preparatory School, one of the country’s most well-known and highest achieving charter schools.

Jay has led top-quality strategic planning, professional learning, and team development for various schools and organizations. She is most proud of seeing her first cohort of middle schoolers graduate from high school, college and launch real careers. She enjoys all things people, processes and practices. In her downtime, she draws, wins Connect Four, supports Nashville Soccer Club and enjoys live concerts.
